Qeqertarsuaq (Danish, Godhavn) is a port and town on Disko Island off the west coast of Greenland, about 320 km inside the Arctic Circle. Established as a Danish whaling town in 1773, hunting and fishing are still the main occupations of the 900 inhabitants. From the sea the town’s colourful homes are reflected in the still water peppered by icebergs – every building functional, colourful, backed by jagged peaks covered by streaky summer clouds. Nanortalik is Greenland's southernmost town and is located in a scenic area with some of Greenland's most picturesque fjords, small woodlands and steep mountainsides. The town's name means ‘place of polar bears’, which refers to the polar bears that occasionally pass through the town in summer, together with the pack ice from the Arctic Ocean. It is a small town where everyone knows everyone else, and visitors appreciate meeting a friendly population of hunters who live in beautiful natural surroundings.
