EMBARK ON A SUSTAINABLE VOYAGE WITH CLEAN CRUISING
A healthy cruise industry relies on healthy waterways. With the ocean covering 71% of the earth’s surface and 440 kilos of plastic entering the sea every second, we need to protect it.
At Clean Cruising, we believe in living up to our name and being part of the solution. Our partnership with the Resea Project is a testament to our commitment to healthier seas and a more sustainable industry.
Just as every cruise celebrates and connects you to the world’s waters, it’s also an opportunity to protect them.

Why Resea?
Operating out of Indonesia, one of our closest neighbours and the second biggest contributor of ocean plastic waste in the world, tackling this problem at the source makes a lot of sense. ReSea is one of just two independently certified companies worldwide carrying out plastic waste collection from waterways. The plastic collection process of ReSea is certified by DNV as well as audited weekly by a third party - Intertek - ensuring accountability and transparency.
Beyond removing plastic from waterways, in a place where there is no waste management infrastructure, ReSea is making a real difference to local communities by creating jobs, supplementing income and improving livelihoods.
Indonesians also make up a significant proportion of crew aboard cruise ships, making this initiative even more relevant.
1. Collect plastic waste
Local ReSea workers gather plastics in the seas and rivers by boat. Plastic collected then logged in the system.
2. Collector weighs waste

3. Transported, sorted and weighed at ReSea Project Sorting Facility
Off-site quality check & final weight is deducted by 12% to account for water and dirt.
4. Sorting of waste by ReSea Project team
Different plastics identified for distribution.
5. Distribution of sorted waste
Sent to be recycled or waste-to-energy partners.
Plastic collection process is certified by DNV and documented by batch number, coordinates, pictures, date, and initials of collector. Weekly on-site sample inspections of weighing by Intertek

Why has Clean Cruising chosen to remove ocean plastic waste as its key sustainability initiative?
A healthy cruise industry relies on healthy oceans and waterways. After significant research into where we could have the maximum impact, Clean Cruising decided to pursue removing plastic waste from the oceans. Further investigation led us to the ReSea Project, one of the leading ocean and river plastic removal companies in the world, whose collection process is independently certified.
From 1 July 2024, every cruise booked with us will help remove plastic from the world’s oceans and rivers.

Who is ReSea?
ReSea Project provides a certified plastic collection process focused on removing plastic waste from our oceans and waterways. Founded in 2021, ReSea has concentrated its efforts in Indonesia, where they engage local communities including traditional fishermen in the cleanup. Once collected, the ocean and river plastic waste is weighed, sorted, and recycled or used for waste-to-energy. Since 2021 ReSea has removed over 2,500 tonnes of plastic waste from the oceans. ReSea is one of only a few companies worldwide to have their plastic collection process certified by DNV – one of the worlds leading quality assurance and risk management companies.
-
How do we know that ocean plastic waste is actually removed?
By partnering with ReSea, we have independent verification of how much ocean plastic waste is removed. ReSea is one of only few companies worldwide to have their plastic collection process certified by DNV. The certified plastic collection process is documented by batch number, coordinates, pictures, date, and initials of collector.
Clean Cruising receives a certificate each month stating the amount of ocean plastic waste removed on our behalf, which we publish on our website.
