Macquarie Island is a sub-Antarctic island (54.5 deg.S) that is part of the state of Tasmania, Australia, located in the Southern Ocean. It lies 1500 km from Tasmania, and 1000 km from New Zealand. The island is rectangular, 32 km by 5 km, running N-S. The Australian Antarctic Division maintains a permanent base, the Macquarie Island Station, on the 130 m wide isthmus at the northern tip of the island at the foot of Wireless Hill. The island has a tundra climate with occasional snow.
