Dusky Sound is a fjord on the SW corner of New Zealand, in Fjordland National Park. In 1770 it was given its name by Captain Cook and his crew as that was the time of night when they found it. Milford Sound runs 15 km inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock faces, such as the Elephant and Lion Peaks that rise to 1200 m or more on either side. The Snares (named as shipping hazards) lie 100 km SW of New Zealand’s southernmost point on Stewart Island. The Snares Islands consist of the main North East Island, smaller Broughton Island, and a number of rocky stacks. Enderby Island is part of the Auckland Islands. These have been called one of the bleakest places on Earth, as it is situated in the sub-Antarctic region, 465km south of New Zealand. The Auckland Islands, or Motu Maha, form an archipelago of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion, and they lie 465 km from the South Island port of Bluff. From the early 19th C whalers and sealers set up temporary bases there, and explorers included Dumont D’Urville (giving name to a future Ponant Yacht Cruises explorer vessel) and James Ross.
