Tokyo, located on the eastern side of the main island of Honshu, is the core of the most populated area in the world (urban area 38M). The small fishing village of Edo was fortified in 1457 with Edo Castle (The Imperial Palace now stands at this location) and became one of the largest cities in the world by the 18th C. The capital of the prefecture of the same name, Hiroshima, situated at the centre of the Chugoku region in western Honshu – Japan’s largest island – is possibly best known for being the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon. Sokcho is a city of 90,000 population, a port on the Sea of Japan, just 50km south of the border with North Korea. Many of its people have relatives in North Korea, and the city was in North Korea until the end of the Korean War in 1953. Kyongju (Gyeongju) lies on the SE coast of South Korea facing the Sea of Japan. Kyongju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla (57 BC – 935 AD), which ruled about two-thirds of the Korean Peninsula at its height between the 7th and 9th centuries, for close to one thousand years.
