Okinawa Island is the largest of a group of one hundred and fifty islands, the Ryukyu islands, scattered over a wide area in the southernmost prefecture of Japan. The city of Okinawa is second to the capital Naha, 22km to the SW. Dalian is a port of the Republic of China, lying in the Yellow Sea midway between Tanggu (the port for Beijing) to the west, and the coastline of North Korea to the east. The city’s history in modern times included occupations by Britain, Russia (as a port and rail terminal), and Japan. Mojiko (Moji Port) lies at the western end of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, between the islands of Honshu and Kyushu where they are separated by the Kanmon Straits. Mojiko is a ward of the city of Kitakyushu, and a major trading port for the region at the end of the 19th century. Adjacent to the port is the Mojiko Retro District, a tourist site centred on Mojiko Station (wooden and modelled on Rome’s Termini Station), and Kyushu Railway History Museum which a short walk from Mojiko Station. The capital of the prefecture of the same name, Hiroshima, situated at the centre of the Chugoku region in western Honshu – Japan’s largest island – is possibly best known for being the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon. Today, though, it is a modern cosmopolitan city with wide boulevards and criss-crossing rivers. Cheju (Jeju), a city on an island of the same name, is a beautiful destination located off the SW coast of South Korea, 90km off the Korean Peninsula. Cheju is a well-known resort with hotels and casino facilities, and welcomes over ten million visitors from mainland Korea, Japan, and China every year. Nagasaki City, on the island of Kyushu in Japan, lies at the heart of Nagasaki-hanto Peninsula. As one of Japan's closest port cities to the Asian mainland, Nagasaki has played a prominent role in foreign trade relations for many centuries. Nagoya, the fourth-largest city in Japan and one of its major ports, is located on the Pacific coast in the Chubu region on central Honshu. One of the two most famous sightseeing spots is the reconstructed Nagoya Castle that was built in 1612 with two golden carp on the roof, and that today is also home to an interesting museum that contains an ancient Atsuta shrine as well as some 4,400 national historic treasures.
