Hakodate is the largest city and port in southern Hokkaido, Japan. It is considered to have – as seen from Mt. Aomori is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture, situated on the northernmost tip of the main Japanese island facing Hokkaido. It has a cold maritime climate with short cool summers and has heavy snowfalls in winter. It is a World Heritage Site, as it has the world's largest virgin forest of beech trees. Toyama is surrounded by steep mountains on the coast of the Sea of Japan in central Honshu, about 200 km N of Nagoya and 300 km NW of Tokyo. During the last century heavy and chemical industries developed in Toyama, based on abundant electricity which was generated by hydro power stations in the mountains near-by. There are numerous attractions to visit such as the Fugan Unga Kansui Park that is an oasis in a busy city, the history museum of Toyama Inotani Sekisyokan, as well as the Family Amusement Park and the Botanic Gardens. Kanazawa, situated on the Sea of Japan between the Sai and Asano Rivers, was founded as a castle town in 1583, but today is a typical peaceful Japanese city of traditional crafts. It is the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture. Kanazawa sits on the Sea of Japan, bordered by the Japanese Alps, Hakusan National Park and Noto Peninsula National Park. Sakaiminato is an important fishing port facing Mihio Bay and the Sea of Japan to the east, and inland Lake Nakaumi to the west. It lies in the middle of West Japan. Busan (formerly Pusan), the second largest city and principal port of South Korea, is situated in the SE of the peninsula on the Korea Strait. The city has many steep hills, creating a delightful mix of mountains and ocean. While Busan was relatively untouched during the Korean War, the flood of refugees has shaped the city. Nagasaki City, on the island of Kyushu in Japan, lies at the heart of Nagasaki-hanto Peninsula. The capital of the prefecture of the same name, Hiroshima, situated at the centre of the Chugoku region in western Honshu – Japan’s largest island – is possibly best known for being the first city in history to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon. Today, though, it is a modern cosmopolitan city with wide boulevards and criss-crossing rivers. The modern Japanese city of Takamatsu, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is the main gateway to Shikoku Island. While the downtown is relatively easy to navigate on foot, many visitors choose to rent a bicycle.
