Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg, on the banks of the Salzach river, at the northern boundary of the Alps. Earliest human settlements at Salzburg were by the Celts and in 15 BC they were merged into one city by the Romans. The name Salzburg literally means "Salt Fortress", and derives its name from the town’s tax revenue from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach river.
