Novaya Zemlya (“New Land”, aka Novaja Zemlja, Nova Zembla) is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of Russia, with a population of 2,700. It consists of two major islands forming a straight line of 820 km, just 1,500 km south of the North Pole. Geographically the islands are a northern extension of the Ural Mountain range. The northern island is permanently covered by glaciers and ice, and the southern part is low-lying tundra and swamp.
