Martha's Vineyard lies south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, 100 km south of Boston. It is the largest island not connected to the mainland by a bridge or tunnel on the US East Coast. The island was a whaling base in the mid 19th C. It is now an affluent summer colony. The island is covered with windswept moors, dense forests, dramatic coastal cliffs and soft sandy beaches.
