Kuwait City is the capital of the emirate of Kuwait, on the shore of the Persian Gulf. It is a bustling metropolis of high-rise office buildings, luxury hotels, wide boulevards and well-tended parks and gardens. Kuwait was first settled in the early 18th Century and quickly became a successful and thriving sea port, with its own dhow fleet of about 800 and trading relations to Baghdad and Damascus. Today its seaport is used by oil tankers, cargo ships and many pleasure craft.
