Kilwa Kisiwani is a community on an Indian Ocean island in the Kilwa archipelago off the southern Swahili Coast of present-day Tanzania in eastern Africa. It is 240 km S of Dar es Salaam. Kilwa Kisiwani is an archaeological city-state site dating from the 8th C. Tourists from Dar es Salaam stay in Kilwa Masoko on the mainland, obtain a permit to visit, and cross by dhow over the narrow channel to Kisiwani.
