Kalamata is the capital and chief port of the Peloponnese peninsula, in the very south of Greece. It lies on the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf. The city is dominated by a thirteenth century castle, the Kastro, a most interesting backdrop to the town, and well worth visiting to obtain wonderful views of the town and the Gulf.
