Dunkirk (Dunkerque) lies near the narrowest part of the English Channel, on the French coast 13 km from the Belgian border. The important port of Calais lies 67 km to the west. Dunkirk is historically associated with the Battle of Dunkirk from 26 May to 4 June 1940 during WWII. The Dunkirk evacuation saw 338,226 British, Belgian and French troops rescued by a hastily assembled fleet of 861 mostly merchant marine boats.
