Cayenne (pop. 132,000) is the capital of French Guiana, an overseas department of France, situated on a former island at the mouth of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic Coast. The important port Dégrad des Cannes is located on the estuary of the Mahury River, 9 km to the SE of the Cayenne River estuary. Timber, rosewood essence, rum, and gold are exported in small quantities.
