Bintan Island is the largest of the 3200 islands in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia. The capital of Riau Islands province, Tanjung Pinang, lies on the SW coast, where most of the 345,000 inhabitants live. Singapore lies 84 km to the NW, separated by Singapore Strait. Historically, from the 3rd C it was on the trading route between India and China; in the 12 C was known as “Pirate Island”; then colonised by the Chinese, British, and Dutch in turn .
