Kelly had the incredible opportunity to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey aboard the brand-new Explora I, launched just a few months earlier. This elegant ocean cruise liner is part of MSC's new fleet of luxury ships, which will ultimately consist of five vessels.
My journey began with a flight on Air New Zealand from the Gold Coast, via Auckland to Vancouver. The new Dreamliners offered plenty of room in economy class—hint: pre-book extra legroom seats or a 'quiet area' for more comfort—and the service was excellent. Upon arrival in Vancouver, I enjoyed a night at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, a well-priced five-star accommodation with all the amenities needed for a good night's rest after a long flight.
The following morning, I visited Stanley Park, taking a traditional horse-drawn carriage tour through its beautiful scenery. I then made my way to Vancouver Harbour, where three ships were in port, but the Explora I stood out with its shiny jet-black hull, gold trimmings, and bright red tenders. As an Explora Journeys guest, I enjoyed priority lines for everything, from baggage drop-off to customs check-in, ensuring a smooth embarkation process.
Upon boarding, I was guided to my ocean suite through a stunning lobby adorned with chandeliers, marble walls, and beautiful artwork. I was greeted with champagne, and all drinks were included in my cruise fare. My ocean suite, located on deck 10 AFT, was luxurious, featuring a walk-in robe, bathroom with heated marble floors, lush bathrobes, and a Dyson hairdryer. The king-sized bed was dressed in high-quality linen, and the suite led out to a spacious balcony with lounge chairs. The overall décor was modern and elegant, making me feel relaxed immediately.
As we set sail from Vancouver, I enjoyed champagne while watching the sunset over the snow-capped mountains. That evening, I dined at the Yacht Club, where I had the best beef carpaccio of my life, paired with exquisite wines selected by our sommelier. It was luxury at its finest!
The ship boasts six restaurants, including the Emporium marketplace for all-day dining and four specialty restaurants—all included in the cruise fare—Fil Rouge for French cuisine, Marble and Co, a European steakhouse, the Med Yacht Club (no reservations required), and Sakura, a stunning Japanese restaurant filled with cherry blossom trees. The sixth restaurant, Anthology, honours Italian culinary roots.
Exploring the ship, I found corridors lined with magnificent artwork leading to the pool area, covered by a glass retractable roof, surrounded by whirlpools and sun lounges. Everything was pristine and elegant, far exceeding my expectations.
The first sea day, was dedicated to relaxation at the Ocean Wellness spa. I indulged in steam rooms, saunas, the salt room, and the hydrotherapy pool, all included in my cruise fare. Treatment rooms offered world-class services, and reservations were recommended for those.
Don't miss out on breakfast in-suite breakfast on your balcony!
Our itinerary included two port days, starting with Astoria, Oregon. I arranged breakfast in my suite on the balcony, set up with white tablecloths and fresh coffee. It was the perfect way to start the day, watching the captain dock along the Columbia River while enjoying views of mountains and spotting whales!
After breakfast, I joined some Explora hosts to explore Astoria. The town felt like a scene from an old western movie, with rich history and charming shops. We visited Flavel House, a restored Victorian mansion, and enjoyed a local seafood diner’s famous chowder served in a bread bowl.
The next day, we arrived in San Francisco. I woke early and headed to the Explora Lounge for stunning 270-degree ocean views—perfect for watching the ship sail under the Golden Gate Bridge! The staff served warm croissants and fresh coffee as the captain sounded the foghorn. As the fog lifted, we glided beneath the bridge, with views of the city and Alcatraz ahead.
After exploring Fisherman’s Wharf and touring ancient Muir Woods, I enjoyed sunset drinks back on the ship in the infinity-edge whirlpools, snacking on smoky truffle oil peanuts. That evening, we dined at the Marketplace, savouring fresh seafood like crab and oysters, along with made-to-order pasta and crepes for dessert.
On our final day at sea before reaching sunny Los Angeles, I participated in onboard activities, including art sessions and informative lectures featuring the captain. I relaxed with nightcaps at the Malt Whisky bar or enjoyed all-day dining by the pool. The Creme Café offered delightful coffees and high-quality teas.
The Explora I features open corridors adorned with impressive artwork, including a stunning Swarovski chandelier above the glass staircase in the lobby. With shops, a casino, and a Rolex store (the only one at sea), this small luxury ship truly had it all.
I will be forever grateful for my time aboard the Explora I. It was an experience combining relaxation, exploration, and luxury—a cruise holiday to remember. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an unforgettable luxury cruise adventure!
