We were delighted to be invited to experience a Celestyal cruise. Getting over to Greece was pretty enjoyable, thanks to our flight aboard Qatar Airways. We landed into Athens before being transported down to Piraeus, which took about an hour by car. We checked into the Port Square Hotel for a one-night stay, where the hotel provided a cosy boutique-like atmosphere, ideal for relaxing before our cruise, with stunning views of the marina and easy access to local attractions.
After breakfast the next morning at the hotel, it was time to embark on the Celestyal Journey for a 7-night cruise exploring the breathtaking Greek islands. The itinerary included stops in Thessaloniki, Crete, Kusadasi, Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos, offering a perfect blend of culture, history, and stunning landscapes.
We were lucky to stay in an Ocean View cabin on Deck 5, which was spacious at approximately 170 square feet. The large window provided incredible views of the Aegean Sea, enhancing the experience. The cabin was well-appointed with comfortable twin beds, ample storage, and a private bathroom featuring modern amenities.
Milos was a highlight! Celeystal hosted our group for a private tour, and we drove to a beach on the north side of the island, called Sarakiniko Beach. We jumped from the cliff face into the Mediterranean Sea (after taking some time to talk ourselves into it)! Afterwards, we were treated to a private lunch in a local cantina, where the food was endless and delicious, and many aperol spritzes were enjoyed too.
Our first stop was in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city. A highlight of our visit was the archaeological site of Vergina, where the tombs of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, and his son are located. Visiting these tombs offers a profound glimpse into ancient Macedonian history and the legacy of Alexander the Great, whose conquests shaped the course of history. It was a half-day tour which allowed us to wander and find a hidden court of local tavernas and restaurants and soak up the local vibes.
Next was Kusadasi and we visited Ephesus and the Terrace Houses. These well-preserved homes, located on the slopes of the hill, offer a unique glimpse into the daily lives of Ephesus's wealthier residents. This tour gave a fascinating journey through history, highlighting the richness of Roman and early Byzantine life. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that deepened our appreciation for ancient cultures.
In Mykonos, we enjoyed a walking food tour and got to sample the local tastes they had to offer, with some time to shop around the local Plaka, where they were selling jewellery and local ceramics from their tiny shops. We were lucky enough to enjoy a late departure from here, allowing us to enjoy dinner shore-side. This was a great way to immerse in the local culture.
Comfortable shoes in Santorini are a must! It’s incredibly hilly and we missed a turn and ended up walking the enormous hill from the old port instead of taking the cable car. It was pretty slippery too thanks to the donkeys passing by.
The ship features comfortable lounges, a spacious dining area, and multiple bars and the onboard dining options include a main restaurant serving delicious Mediterranean and international cuisine, as well as specialty venues offering a range of culinary experiences. Meals are often accompanied by local wines, enhancing the flavours of each dish. The entertainment onboard includes live music, dance performances, and themed nights, ensuring that there's always something happening on board. Guests can also participate in cultural activities, such as cooking classes and dance lessons.
Overall, the Celestyal Journey combines comfort, culture, and entertainment, creating a memorable experience through the beautiful Greek islands. Highly recommend it for those who love history and culture. It is a port-intensive itinerary with no sea days – with lots of walking to be done. The demographic onboard was very open, with even some young children onboard but mostly adults ranged from 30-75 years of age.
