Roses is a municipality and important fishing port and tourist centre situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses in Catalonia, Spain. Founded in the 5th century BC by Greeks, it was later settled by Romans and ruins from this period can be seen today. The picturesque village of Collioure, an idyllic place on the rocky coastline, is situated in the very south of France, 26 km from the Spanish border. Its small Catalan harbor is sheltered by a quiet bay where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean Sea. Sanary-sur-Mer is a commune at the very western end of the Côte d’Azur in the SE of France, and is located 13 km from Toulon and 49 km from Marseille. Indeed there are numerous towns that are of interest to tourists within easy reach of this port. Considered to be the most beautiful port of Southern France, its harbour is lined with palm trees and pastel coloured houses on either side of a 13th century tower that was once a part of an important defence system. The seaside resort town of Saint-Tropez that lies 104 km to the east of Marseille in SE France is very popular with tourists. Set on the lovely blue water of the Bay of Saint-Tropez, this modern version of a medieval town is distinguished by the line of yachts along the quay, the promenade, and the famous terrace cafes. Behind the cafes, the small streets and old buildings comprising sunset-hued pink, orange and deep red townhouses are picturesque, but they're possibly more popular for the multitude of shops and restaurants than their historical significance. Villefranche, aka Villefranche-sur-Mer, is a Mediterranean port in the Côte d'Azur region of the French Riviera. It is located about 6 km E of the city of Nice and 10 km SW of Monaco in one of the deepest natural harbours of any port in the Mediterranean Sea, and provides a safe anchorage for large ships. Seen from the water, Calvi, on the island of Corsica off the southern shores of France, is a beautiful spectacle with its three immense citadel bastions topped with ochre buildings that are sharply defined against a hazy backdrop of mountains. A hangout for European glitterati in the 1950s, the town these days is an interesting resort, in that its glamorous marina, souvenir shops and fussy boutiques contrast with the down-to-earth villages of its rural hinterland.
