The Old Town is built on a limestone island and linked to the mainland by a 16th C bridge. The walls and bastions surrounding the old town are believed to have been built in the 15th century to fend off pirate attacks, as the port was once part of an important trade route. Messina is a harbour on the eastern coast of Sicily, a short ferry crossing to mainland Italy lying to the east. Situated on the Atlantic coast of Spain, Gijon began as a fishing village almost 3,000 years ago, and today is an important port that is an attractive combination of seafaring flavour, heritage buildings, and modern urban development.
